Last night, I was witness to the best amateur MMA event I was privileged to see. Evolution Amateur MMA kicked out all the stops and went full throttle with their championship event in Wayne, New Jersey, that saw titles crowned and records broken. In the main event, Jonathan Pecyna beat Justin Jimenez by head & arm triangle after two rounds of back and forth action from both combatants. Jimenez almost ended the fight in the first with a tight guillotine, but Pecyna rallied back and by the second round took over and worked for the finish.
Michael Caulo set a new EVO AMMA record with his 11 second knockout of Michael D’ Urso… that is, he would have if Ben Syers did not break it a few fights later against Bobby Ascolillo in 4 seconds! Generoso Spagnuolo defeated Keith Knudsen early in the third round by rear naked choke to also add his first title belt around his waist. In other non-title fights, Omar Elabed defeated Fernando Carral by decision in a match that saw slams galore and Caleb Solano defeated Melvis Figueroa in a three round brawl that saw both men exhausted by the time for the decision to be announced.
Promoter of the EVO AMMA series, Steven Katz, takes great pride in his events and it shows. From his great matchmaking (not an easy thing to do in the Ammy leagues), to his production that ran like a well-oiled machine, and to his buffet that made this nerd very happy, EVO AMMA continues to set the golden standard for how an amateur MMA show should be put together. His next event, titled “Holiday Havoc”, will be December 4, check out their website for more info on this event, especially since it’s only five minutes away from NYC. Oh, and big thanks to Zack Lynch of the original MMAPhotography.com for letting me borrow his lens to take some great shots! Without Zack, I would know nothing about shooting fights!
