We have another match to add to the growing card of UFC 128 in New Jersey, and it’s another solid one!
Yoshihiro Akiyama was anticipated to be on the UFC 128 card against Chael Sonnen, but with Sonnen suspended by the promotion for his recent legal troubles, “Sexyama” was left without an opponent. Luckily for him, Nate Marquardt stepped up and is taking the bout with the judoka. MMAWeekly.com confirmed the match that was originally reported by ESPN.
The former Japanese MMA star (as in Japanese MMA, not that he is Japanese since he is half to clarify for the trolls) is 1-2 with the UFC, and may be in a must-win situation as he faces Marquardt in March. Marquardt’s last fight was a loss to Yushin Okami in November 2010, and Nate is looking to get back into the title scene, so this is an important match for both men as one fights to get closer to the belt while the other fights to survive.
Yesterday, we added the Miller brothers to the event, with Dan Miller VS Nick Catone and Jim Miller VS Kamal Shalorus to the card. It would seem the main card is more or less set at this point, with room for another undercard bout or two to showcase some local talent. UFC 128 is headlined by Rashad Evans challenging Mauricio “Shogun” Rua for his light-heavyweight title and a number of other fights with East Coast fighters. It is quickly becoming a must-see card for us tri-state MMA fans. In the meantime, we continue to wait for more confirmed fights for Strikeforce’s February 12 show in Jersey, which spotlights their heavyweight tournament and Fedor’s return to the cage since his loss to Werdum in June.
