With the first rounds of their heavyweight grand prix tournament about to kick off, Strikeforce has announced a slew of events next week leading into the event.
First off, “The Strikeforce Fan Experience” will happen this Tuesday afternoon. Hosted by Scott Ferrall (as in the voice of YAMMA Pit Fighting) with special guest deejay, DJ Clue, all eight tournament entrants will be in attendance signing autographs, working out for the public and partaking in contests to win some swag like free tickets to the event. This all-access event will be held at The Roseland Ballroom, located at 239 W. 52nd Street just West of Broadway, and is from 4-6 PM. That’s a good thing, since it will not interfere with the rally to legalize MMA in NY, which is from 12-2 by city hall, so you can really make a full MMA day for yourself on Tuesday. Come down to support the sanctioning of MMA in New York, then hang out with Strikeforce fighters after!
On Wednesday, there will be a press conference for the media, which I will be at and report back to you after with the usual video coverage. Finally, on Friday, the Official Weigh-Ins, which are open to public, will be held at IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. This is not necessarily the best place to talk to a fighter or get an autograph, but then again, this is a heavyweight tournament so I doubt there will be much weight cutting to worry about.
Next Saturday, February 12, marks the start of their historic tournament, which features Andrei Arlovski hoping to bounce back from his streak of losses against Sergei Kharitonov, and Fedor Emelianeko makes his return to MMA since his first loss in a decade to face off against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva. It will be live on Showtime, but better yet, buy yourself a ticket and see it in person (since it seems like there are still plenty for sale without having to go through scalpers). Hope to see all my east coast nerds representing there!
