You may have noticed that many sites around the internet have temporarily “blacked out” or shut down for the day. This is a unified stand against two pending bill that are in Congress and will go to be voted on next week.
The Protect IP Act (PIPA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) are two unconstitutional acts that would effectively censor the Web and kill hundreds of online businesses and websites. While the original intent may have been to stop digital pirating of media, it has evolved into a vague and hideous beast that seeks to destroy just about any online content that uses content from someone else. To put that in perspective for an MMA site, that means a place like Cagepotato.com or IronForgesIron.com could be shut down for posting a video from an MMA promotion if they do not own the footage, or a site like mine could be vaporized for using clips of licensed fights or even photos that I do not have explicit rights to.
Many vloggers on Youtube, Twitch, Dailymotion, and Blip could be destroyed for using footage of copyrighted material, purely because some people believe that this is causing billions of dollars to be lost for them, even though this has been proven to be untrue. MMA fans will be just one of many groups affected negatively if this gets approved, and the internet will be changed forever in the worst way possible.
The Senate will begin voting on January 24th, and we need to make sure that these bills do not pass. You can learn more about them at this site here, and you can sign this petition online via Google if you want to fight against it.
